Remove home address on checks, business cards, etc. Do not include/list real property address if not necessary.
Place real property in a trust and list utilities under the name of that trust. If renting, put the rental agreement in another person's name.
Utilize a private mailbox to receive all personal mail, NOT at the post office. Inform everyone, including the post-office of the change of address. Destroy discarded mail. Any packages being delivered should use another name.
File for confidential voter status.
If using a phone line, install at another location and have calls forwarded to the residence or use a cell phone.
File a change of address with the MVA and obtain a new license with the new address. Obtain a new license plate number as well, if necessary.
Once your stalker is in custody, register for "VINE" to receive updates on their status - transfers and release. However, we recommend you also regularly follow up with the SA, Vine has been known to have glitches, stalking victims have died depending on their services, do not rely solely upon VINE to update you. KNOW WHEN YOUR STALKER WILL BE RELEASED.
Noonlight can be installed on your mobile device to get emergency aid or support to your exact location with just the release of a button. When you feel unsafe, or moments where you need immediate emergency help:
"All-in-one privacy app." Create secure digital profile(s) called Sudos. Use your Sudo profile instead of your personal information, on and offline. The platform is complete with all the necessary components to build market offerings. These scalable components include secure and private calling, messaging, video, browsing, purchasing, and more.
Ensure you keep updated emergency contact information on your phone. Most smartphones allow you to keep information available on the home-screen without needing to unlock the phone. Adding other information such as current medical information is also advised. If your phone cannot do this, keep this information visible in your wallet, if you have a medical condition, wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace.
Maryland female stalking victims reported 59.1% lifetime occurrence rate of threats of physical harm (Smith, et al., 2017). In 1997 a UW study found “[Participants], in this study, those who learned martial arts techniques of aikido and karate reported feeling more assertive, but less hostile and aggressive,” as they decreased feelings of vulnerability (Schwarz, 1997). Clanton, (2004) also found women specifically reported increased levels of self-esteem compared to men, following self-defense courses. Hollander, (2014) found in a University-based study, that a 10-week self-defense course was able to help women deter would-be attackers.
It is important to note that self-defense actions can only be used to extricate one's self from a situation. The actions taken must be objectively reasonable. One must be protecting themselves from imminent harm. The force used must be responding to an ongoing or present imminent threat. (Rape Aggression Defense Systems, 2016).
Maryland female stalking victims reported 49.0 % lifetime occurrence rate of approach and showing up (Smith, et al., 2017). Therefore, it is suggested that victims consider ways to protect themselves or alert others to danger. Just Stalking does not endorse any specific form of self protection, every victim, depending on their circumstances and level of training, has to determine what is best for them. Options for protection may include, but are not limited to:
Please review all applicable laws and relevant policies before purchasing or bringing items with you to any locations.
Some victims find it necessary to change their appearance, this may involve changes to their hairstyles or clothes. Creating a "disguise" that deters one's stalker, but that does not draw unnecessary attention, may be more complicated than one anticipates. The idea is to blend in, thus identifying clothes, or styles, that do not draw attention, can be difficult. Essentially changing one's identity can also be emotionally taxing.
Lifetime reports among Maryland female stalking victims found that 41.1% of victims experienced being "watched or followed," (Smith, et al., 2017). If your stalker is relentlessly following you, they will likely find either your home and/or your work location. Whatever your mode of transportation, it is advised you alternate, to the best of your ability, your routes. If you notice them following you, attempt to stop at a first responder location (preferably police station). The goal is to keep them from learning both locations. If possible switch cars with a trusted person, (without putting them in danger), or rent a car. Ensure you are not being tracked through cyber means, such as GPS. If you need to have your license number changed, do that immediately. When you can, park in a garage, lit area, and/or within sight of a camera, or door.
It is not out of the realm of possibility that stalking can become so relentless that the victim will consider moving; if this occurs, be sure to file with the Maryland Address Confidentiality Program (ACP).
Maryland female stalking victims reported 59.1% lifetime occurrence rate of threats of physical harm (Smith, et al., 2017). It can be uncomfortable for victims, or anyone, to discuss end of life concerns, including wills and insurance policies. However, stalking can become violent quickly, and with little warning to the victim(s). It is important that victim(s) and their families have their affairs in order, should grave bodily injury or death occur, intentionally, or unintentionally.
