Winter 2024 Stalking Safety Tips

PARK INSIDE

Avoid driving alone or at night.

1.  Park inside if you can on to protect your car from vandalism.

a.  Use a local overnight garage with security if you don’t have a home garage.

b.  If you do not have a garage, consider investing in outdoor lighting for your driveway (NNW, 2023).

1.  Don’t drive distracted (NSC, 2023)

a.  However, have your cell always available for emergencies.

b.  Keep detectives numbers available. 

c.  Identify all emergency numbers along your route.

2.  Keep a copy of your PPO on your person &/or in your car.

3.  Practice defensive driving (NSC, 2023).

a.  Stalkers have been known to follow and aggressively harass victims on the road.

b. Notify Law Enforcement immediately about any suspicious or unlawful activity.

Vehicle SecuritY tips

1. Follow instincts

Park vehicles in well lit areas. Do not patronize lots where cars must be left unlocked or keys must be surrendered.

2. Lights on

When parking in a garage, turn the light on and lock the garage door.

3. Tampering

Equip the gas tank with a lock. The hood-locking device must be controlled from inside.

4. Check surroundings

Visually check the front and rear passenger compartments before entering the vehicle. Check under the car, as well as the trunk for tampering.

5. Know who's working on your car

Select reliable service stations.

6. KEEP THE DOORS LOCKED!

Keep doors locked while vehicle is in use.

7. Alert

Be alert for vehicles following you.

8. Traveling

When traveling, plan ahead, know locations of police, fire, anywhere you plan to stop, and be able to alert authorities to your location. Sound the horn and attract attention if there is trouble.

9. Routes

Use different routes of travel each day. If followed, drive to the police or fire station.

10. Sorry, can't help

Do NOT stop to assist stranded motorists, even those who are not your known stalker. They may be a "proxy" stalker, someone the stalker has enlisted to aid them in your pursuit.
